This is the first year for my artichokes. So, now that we're done eating them, I've been pretty excited to see them come into bloom.

Em....
I don't want to be a killjoy or anything (I've been accused of such) -- but letting your artichokes bloom like that will reduce your yield next season. Now -- if you like them for color and flowering purposes only -- hey -- NOT a problem. However -- we like to eat ours. We let a lot of them go to seed last year -- about 20 of them bloomed. As a consequence of that -- production this year was WAY off -- about half what we normally get. When I started searching for answers to why production was off -- I came across information relating to flowering and subsquent year production.

Love those artichoke blooms !
Blogging can be lots of work...do it for yourself...it's a good way to keep records.
hi,
Just drop by from Blotanical.
Love your artichoke blooms.
Never seen a real life ones in my region.
I love the bloom color. I wonder why more people don't grow artichokes as ornamentals?
Oh they are gorgeous! They would never make it to bloom here... we love artichokes. Wish they would grow in my garden.
oooh, that is pretty!! Never seen artichoke in bloom before.
The artichoke blooms are really lovely. I have never seen real ones or eaten real artichokes before.
I have never seen an artichoke plant before they are huge and the blooms are fabulous.
Stunning! They make me wish my garden wasn't so far north.
Hi Kelly!
These artichokes are beautiful, and thanks to Bill for that insightful comment on flowers and next year's yield. I have some artichokes too and I am glad to know that now!
What does your garden look like now that it is fall? Are you planning a cold season garden?
Looking forward to more!
Beth
